Elena caught sight of him, confusion coloring her face as she walked up the steps to her house garment bag in hand. She moved slowly up to the porch as she spoke.
“What are you doing here?”
Damon glanced up as he finished pulling the door shut, brows furrowed, voice hesitant.
“Failed and…feeble attempt at doing the right thing.”
She raised an eyebrow watching him closely.
“Which was?”
He made a face and shook his head as he advanced toward her without looking directly at her.
“It’s not important. Let me take this for you.”
His hand brushed hers as he lifted the dress out of her arms and a shiver ran down her spine. She swallowed hard and turned to face him. Elena wanted to blame the cool night breeze for her body’s reaction, but she knew it would be a lie.
“Thank you.”
He nodded. His movements were measured and slightly weary as he laid the garment bag on the porch swing. As he turned fidgeting and moved around glancing everywhere and nowhere. At the same time she could hear the confusion in his voice.
“You know I came to this town wanting to destroy it and tonight I…found myself wanting to protect it. How does that happen?”
His eyes finally met hers and she wasn’t sure what to say. Several emotions swirled in his gaze and she opened her mouth, but nothing came out. He didn’t give her another chance to speak, just continued talking as if he’d never stopped.
“I’m not a hero Elena. I don’t do good…it’s not…in me.”
His brows were creased, frustration covering his face. Damon was lost. He wasn’t sure how to respond to these emotions that he hadn’t let out in so long. Standing there talking to Elena, wanting to fix things for her, needing her to be okay. It was all new and he wasn’t sure he liked it.
She arched her eyebrows, head titled slightly as her heartbeat quickened and she spoke.
“Maybe it is.”
Damon shook his head.
“No, no that’s reserved for my brother and you…and Bonnie. Even though she has every reason to hate me she still helped Stefan save me.”
She shrugged her shoulders lightly and took in his expression as she shifted on the porch.
“Why do you sound so surprised?”
The look he gave her made her insides quiver and as he spoke in a low voice and took a step in her direction she swallowed hard.
“Because she did it for you, which means that somewhere along the way, you decided that I was worth saving and I wanted to…thank you…for that.”
He was close enough for Elena to feel the heat of his body against hers. She focused all her energy on staying calm and she was certain she’d pulled it off as she glanced up at him speaking softly.
“You’re welcome.”
Damon heard her heart skip a beat as he leaned in close to her. Elena’s scent surrounding him encompassing all of his senses as he slowly and deliberately pressed his lips gently against her cheek. He felt her suck in a quick breath as he pulled back slightly.
His lips were soft, warm, and not at all what she had expected. Everything Damon did screamed power, violence, aggression and yet his kiss was the exact opposite. Even as he moved away she could still feel him all around her.
Her senses were drunk with his presence. It wasn’t just the look in his eyes; it was the honesty in his voice, his movements. Elena loved Stefan, but after spending the last few weeks getting to know Damon, there was something about him that captured her.
She wanted to push it away, pretend it didn’t exist, but with him as close as he was it was hard and in that moment she realized she wanted him. The shock that speared through her was nerve-wracking. Damon studied her closely as he slowly inched his way towards her mouth.
He gave her more than enough time to push him away or step back, but she didn’t. The second his lips brushed against hers something inside him exploded. It was soft, hesitant and then all of a sudden she was kissing him back.
Her arms pulling him to her body as his hand cupped her cheek, turning her face up to meet his so he could deepen the kiss. Damon could taste her and as they kissed he drank in her soul. She was more than he’d imagined. Sweet, innocent, and yet spicy and passionate.
He could feel their minds melding, and at the first touch he felt her panic. He sent a wave of pure warmth and comfort in her direction telling her not to be afraid. He was surprised she’d never felt this before. Once her fear passed she let go and they connected.
Two minds melding together and her wonder at seeing him, feeling him made him want to show her things she shouldn’t know. Things that he shouldn’t be doing with his brother’s girlfriend, but he couldn’t help it. She was intoxicating.
Elena felt his tongue invade her mouth and she groaned against him as her mind swirled with not only her thoughts and emotions, but his. She’d been frightened at first, but then it was like something opening a door inside of her.
Damon could sense her elation and hesitation. He never wanted to let go of her, but he knew he shouldn’t be doing this. If she didn’t know what was happening it was because Stefan had never made a connection with her.
He’d never opened up that side of himself and his abilities and so Damon shouldn’t be doing it either, but he couldn’t make himself pull away. His hand was just sliding down to her waist when the click of the front door being pulled open knocked him back into reality.
He pulled from the connection leaving Elena frowning as he pulled away. She suddenly felt empty. She wanted to pull him back into her arms, but that was when she saw Jenna staring at her with a look that clearly said she wasn’t happy.
Elena swallowed hard and stepped back from Damon. She couldn’t form much of a sentence so she went with what she could.
“Hi.”
“It’s late…you should come inside.”
She nodded and moved over to her dress on shaky legs. She glanced over her shoulder at Damon one more time before walking into her house. How could she be so stupid? She loved Stefan…how could she kiss Damon?
Elena sighed and when Jenna asked her what she was doing she said she didn’t want to talk about it before climbing the stairs to her room. Damon stood outside the door still in shock. He had kissed Elena…and she had kissed him back.
He brushed his fingers against his lips as he made his way down the porch stairs. Maybe Stefan had something to worry about after all…he sighed. Nearly 200 years and Damon still hadn’t learned his lesson. He had a very strong feeling history was about to repeat itself only this time maybe he’d be on the winning team.
