Deep brown eyes met shinning blue and her heart beat picked up speed as he wrapped his arm around her small body, large palm spreading out over the small of her back. He gave her a small smirk, but it was softer, gentler somehow.

Six months ago if anyone had told her she’d be at the annual masquerade ball with Damon Salvatore, Elena would have told them they were crazy. But the truth was a lot had changed in six months and Damon wasn’t the same man he used to be.

When she first met the elder Salvatore brother, she hadn’t thought much of him and when he’d shown his true colors she’d been afraid of him…even slightly disgusted at what he was. For so long she’d considered him a monster…something not worth sympathy or friendship, but then something had changed.

Damon had opened up to her, showed her the man beneath the monster and she couldn’t help the connection that had formed between them. It was fast and it finally opened her eyes to the side of himself that he hid away beneath the darkness.

The minute Elena saw the good that was buried under the layers of betrayal and pain she knew she had to try and reach them…bring them out. Show him that he could be that man again. Damon didn’t make it easy, and he hurt her emotionally along the way, but she never abandoned him.

That had been what he wanted. To prove that no matter how much someone says they’ll be there for you; eventually they’ll leave just like everyone before them. But not Elena…she stuck it out because she knew Damon wanted to be whole again.

He wanted to belong, to have a life and friends and be loved. So, she took the time to use the goodness in her to reconcile the violence in his heart. To show him that there was more to him then the beast inside that threatened to consume him.

That his beauty did not only lie on the outside, but on the inside as well, but most of all Elena wanted to show Damon that with her friendship she could exorcise the demons from his heart. Show him that what happened in the past, the hurt and disloyalty he’d felt didn’t have to define the person he was.

And over time she had realized that Damon’s deepest desire and deepest fear went hand in hand. The only thing he had ever wanted since Katherine was for someone to love him, all of him for who he was, and yet at the same time he was terrified that he just wasn’t good enough of a person for someone to want to love.

That simple realization had broken Elena’s heart…and it had propelled her into a series of actions that had altered her entire relationship with Stefan and made today a reality. As Damon’s hand lifted slightly higher caressing her back she blinked as they moved around the dance floor and he arched an eyebrow at her in question.

She pulled herself closer to him and shook her head as she smiled at him. “Sorry…I must have zoned out.” His face softened as he spun her away from his body before twirling her back into him, voice teasing, but warm. “My little daydreamer…”

She grinned and he brushed a thumb against her bottom lip, her eyes drifting shut as she placed a kiss against it lightly. She took a deep breath, as her eyes fluttered open and caught his, voice holding a hint of nervousness as she spoke.

“Damon…”

He studied her closely his hands tightening against her slightly as he swallowed hard. “Hmm?” She licked her lips, voice soft. “I love you.” His steps faltered as he stared down on her unsure of if he was hearing things or not.

When she pulled her bottom lip between her teeth he reached forward and cupped her cheek, making sure she was looking at him. A smile pulled at his lips as he spoke in an equally soft voice. “And I love you…” Her face brightened as she leaned up and captured his lips with hers.

Damon coaxed her mouth open beneath his and warmth filled his chest as he released those desires that he’d had for so long were no longer undisclosed, but realized, fulfilled in ways he’s only dreamed.
