I won’t soothe your pain
I won’t ease your strain

Damon knew she watched them. He could feel the heat of her gaze when he and Elena spent their time at the boarding house. Katherine had said she came back for Stefan, but these days Damon wasn’t so sure. Ever since he and Elena had gotten together, the woman he had once loved spent her time attempting to snare his attention.
She wandered the house in next to nothing, trying to tempt him with supple flesh. Made lude comments and he’d found her in his bedroom on more than one occasion. But contrary to popular belief, as badass as Damon was he was nothing if not faithful.
He’d been a womanizer in his day, but when he fell, he fell hard. Years ago it had been Katherine. His love for her had brought him back to Mystic Falls and when he had found out she’d betrayed him, it had broken his heart and sent him spiraling into destruction.
But from that, his friendship with Elena was born and so he couldn’t really hate Katherine for it anymore. But apparently him being with the teenage human had set something off in her because now she wanted him, but it was too late. He was happy, and it wasn’t with her.
Some days when she thought he wasn’t looking, she’d let the pain settle in her eyes and he could see that she knew no matter what she tried it wouldn’t work…the way he looked at Elena Gilbert was the way he used to look at her. On some level he might feel bad, but he was no longer there to soothe Katherine’s pain.
He’s spent half his life doing that…now it was time for him to be with someone who wouldn’t throw him away at the drop of a dime. He had kicked her out months ago, but Stefan being Stefan said as long as she wasn’t causing trouble she could stay.
Damon’s pretty sure he’d done it because his brother knew he wanted her gone. A little pay pack for stealing away hid girlfriend. The truth was, Elena had come willingly. It wasn’t an overnight type of thing. She didn’t break up with Stefan and then run into his arms.
They built a friendship and when things had gone bad between her and Stefan, he’d stuck around and stayed her friend. Then one day…things just naturally progressed and here they were. Things weren’t perfect, she still got on his case about compelling random woman so he could drink from them, though he no longer slept with them it still made her slightly uncomfortable, but she was coming around on the matter.
They’d talked about expectations and they needed to accept the people they were with each other if the relationship was going to work. Ever since then she lectured him a lot less and because of that, he didn’t compel as many woman.
But either way, he and Elena were in a solid place. Katherine could try all she wanted to get him back, but she’d be trying in vain. He had nothing for her to gain; he was no longer in love with her. It might seem odd, some would say the only reason he loved Elena was because she looked just like the former love of his life.
It wasn’t true. The only thing Elena and Katherine had in common were their looks. They were completely different on the inside…Damon might never be perfect and he might never be as ‘good’ as Stefan. But that was okay, because Elena accepted him flaws and all and in the end…that was all that matter.
Katherine could spend the next eternity trying to win him back for all he cared. He’d never forget how she betrayed him…how she treated him and for that…she could suffer in her own brand of hell because he was never going back to her…not when he had a woman who loved him for who he was despite the mistakes he’d made where she was concerned. Damon would take Elena over Katherine any day…
